Glass sugar bowl

Mannheim glassworks of Henry William Stiegel (probably)

PA or NJ, 1765-90

Many of the glass craftsmen in eighteenth-century America emigrated from areas of Germany, and produced wares with similar styles and techniques, making it difficult to know for certain who made this piece. Stiegel was the glassmaker most focused on producing refined tableware before the Revolution. The Stenger glasshouse in Gloucester County, New Jersey is another possibility. Several members of the glassmaking faily emigrated from Germany in 1768 and blew glass for Richard Wistar. Jacob Stenger, an apprentice, ran away from Richard Wistar, who placed a notice for his arrest in the Philadelphia newspapers. When Wistar's glassworks closed, Solomon Stenger erected a glassworks of his own in 1779 in what later became Glassboro.
